Summer Solstice Pose - Sundial
Sundial Pose
Surya Yantrasana with Urdhva Drishti
Surya translates from Sanskrit to mean sun, and Surya is the name of the Sun god in Hinduism. Surya brings light and warmth to earth. Without Surya, the sun, we would not have any life form. Surya is the son of Kasyapa (a Vedic sage) and Aditi (goddess of Infinite Heavens).
Surya is often seen riding a chariot which is pulled by seven horses or by one horse with seven heads. Seven represents the colors of light and the seven chakras. Since early times yogis have worshipped the sun through mantras and sun salutations. Lord Surya, the sun god, represents courage, vitality, and good health. Surya is often referred to as the “creator of life” and the spiritual center of our world.
One of the better-known stories about Surya is that he was married to Sanjana (or sometimes called Saranya). Sanjana could not handle the brightness of Surya so she created her shadow, Chaya, to be with Surya. Sanjana left her home and later became a mare. Surya transformed into a stallion himself and they had several children in the form of a horse figure. The twin horsemen, the Ashvins, are gods of health and healing.
“I am grateful to surya, the sun, for bringing life and warmth to the earth. Because of surya, I am blessed with courage, vitality, and health.” ~ Larissa
