The Four Faces of Brahma
The Four Faces of Brahma
In Buddhist philosophy, the heart has four faces and each face ties in with the four faces of Brahma. The four faces are metta (loving kindness), karuna (compassion), mudita (appreciative joy), and upekkha (equanimity). Brahma is said to dwell in these four forms of love which are termed Brahmaviharas or “divine abidings.”
The four aspects of the heart must be developed within us, and they must not depend on external factors. Development of the four faces of the heart allows for us to promote internal and external healing, social harmony, and resolving of conflict.
The four limbs of the pose represent the four faces of Brahma, and the equanimity between the limbs represents the acceptance of the ups and downs in life.
