What is a sound bath?
People ask me about sound baths more than anything else I offer. They've heard the term, they've seen the photos of the bowls, and they're curious, but they can't quite picture what actually happens. So let's fix that, because once you experience one, you understand immediately why everyone is booking them.
So, what is a sound bath?
A sound bath is a listening experience. You lie down, get comfortable, close your eyes, and let waves of sound wash over you. That's it. There's no workout, no poses to keep up with, and nothing you can do wrong. Your only job is to rest and receive.
While you rest, I play a collection of instruments chosen for their rich, layered tones: crystal singing bowls, a gong, an ocean drum, a rainstick, and more. Each one produces sound you don't just hear, you feel it, softly, in your body. The tones layer and blend and slowly carry your mind somewhere quieter.
What it actually feels like
Everyone describes it a little differently. Some people say their thoughts finally stop racing. Some drift into that dreamy space between awake and asleep. Some feel the vibration of the gong roll right through them and come out the other side lighter, like they set something down they didn't know they were carrying.
What nearly everyone says afterward: "I didn't know I could relax that deeply."
Our minds are busy places. A sound bath gives your brain something beautiful to follow instead of your to-do list, and as the sounds slow down, your breathing slows down, your body follows, and your nervous system gets the message that it's safe to stand down for a while. People book sound baths for stress, for better sleep, for a reset during a hard season, and sometimes just because it feels wonderful.
What happens at one of my sound baths
Because Yoga by Larissa is mobile, I bring the entire experience to you: your home, your backyard, a vacation rental, even your office. I set up the full instrument layout, the blankets and cozy touches, and a custom atmosphere for your group.
A session usually flows like this:
We settle in. A few minutes of easy breathing to arrive and let the day go.
The sound begins. I build the sounds slowly, layer by layer, bowls first, then the deeper tones of the gong and drum woven through.
You float. For the heart of the session, there's nothing to do but listen, breathe, and rest.
We come back gently. The sounds soften, I guide you back, and you sit up slowly, usually a little amazed at how quiet your head is.
No experience is needed. If you can lie down and breathe, you can do this.
Who books sound baths?
Honestly, everyone lately. Couples who want a date night that's actually restorative. Great for a girls or family weekend for those who want something more memorable than another dinner reservation. Corporate teams running on fumes. Birthday celebrations, new moms, stressed-out students, and people moving through grief or big life changes who need an hour where nobody needs anything from them. I have been there for them all!
It pairs beautifully with yoga, too. One of my favorite formats is gentle or restorative yoga flowing straight into a sound bath, movement first, then total surrender.
